Three
"Three phrases have degenerated Arabs," a renowned Egyptian scholar said, "I'm free, how come and none of my business." Sheikh Kishk said a smoker believes that he's free to smoke, and to hell with the passive smokers, who have to inhale the poison he puffs in public transportation. Given the large number of Arabs below the poverty line, some, who are not necessarily destitute, have developed a habit of envying others for things they were not destined to own; "how come X has that and I don't" has become a common buzzword. Personally, it is the "none of my business" that worries me the most. Since a very young age, I've learned that when asked for advice, you should give it. When asked for help, you should rise for the occasion and never give your back to those who have pinned their hopes on you. Despite the fact that I have often been censured for not minding my own business, I have steeled myself on keeping it on, regardless of the outcome.
I was so gutted and offended when my stepdad told me that leaflets were seen in my neighbourhood threatening Shias to leave their houses. The neighbourhood which once prided itself in coexistence and tolerance is about to be a Sunni ghetto, where no Shia is allowed to set foot. The same day I heard the news my dad rang me and asked to come fetch his IDs, which I needed for official papers. Panicked because of his so distinctive Shia name, I begged him not to come. The thought of losing him because of some papers scared me.
I asked stepdad about what the men say about this. "They don't give a damn," he said. As long as they're safe, and as long as it is not them who have succumbed to those attacks, why should they bother. Stepdad was worried. He's on very good terms with those Shia neighbours; they often offered to run his urgent errands, which happened to be in predominantly Shia areas, because they feared for his life. He told me that once those people are forced out of their homes, we will be under non-stop mortar attacks. "It serves us right," I retorted. It sure does.
The Shia "minority" thought that the Imam of the mosque would come for their rescue. Yeah Right! I'm not really interested in Friday sermons, but this time I had to prick up my ears to listen to his response to a letter handed by his desperate neighbours. "The mosque has nothing to do with those leaflets. Period" I rushed to mum's room to check whether she heard what I heard. We were both gaping, "What's wrong with that man!" we said filled with anger. Helllllllllllllllllooooooooooo!!! Aren't Sheikhs supposed to be fearless! Don't they call themselves followers of the Prophet, who had fought so hard to fight discrimination and injustice? Mum and I wished to go to the Imam and snap at him for his cowardly reaction, but unfortunately, he's allergic to women.
Oh, how I wish my dad's grandmother could be reincarnated. Her Jewish neighbour was attacked by looters. She didn't write a blog or diss the powerless men. She grabbed a rifle of her husband's and shot the attackers. I haven't met you in person Bibi, but I wish I were as brave as you were. You must be rolling in your grave for shame of having a granddaughter who has nothing to offer but words uttered under her breath.

You should never feel guilty or powerless about this! you know that very well. Sometimes rational thinking can prevent disasters.
You share, you tell the whole world, you write about it, and above all you express your anger and frustration from those who just try to hide behind the curtain when they are needed the most.
Bibi is and will always be proud of you
Alah Yir7amha el Bibi
You have to think and B+ always dear...
Mixmax,
"you write about it, and above all you express your anger and frustration from those who just try to hide behind the curtain when they are needed the most."
And did I change anything???? NO
Marshy,
Ee wallah Allay Yirhamha, we do need women as strong as her.
Chiki, at least you have not been changed... like many!
Mixmax,
You'll never know. I'd better not cross my bridges before reaching them. And to be honest, I'd rather not compare myself to others. I have been trying to do my best, but I've been bogged down by many factors.
yes, you may be right, but that's entirely different subject....
When I have my doubts about anyone including myself it is the core of the subject.
The subject is to analyse what is rational and how to act accordingly. The Subject is not about act towards something that might effect someone's life forever. The right action might require time and patience, but that should not be some kind of an accumelation in that person's heart and mind that can effect him/her and then make changes in the way he used to see the world and surroundings. That's the core of the subject.
I once read a quote that reads, "Heros are people who rise to the occasion and slip quietly away" I wished I could be that hero, to feel better about myself and to feel more human. There are moments that need prompt actions.
Hello
wonderful words, I'm really impressed. However, I know about those immams, to immam is a job ,just like to be a strips dancer not more, they never think about peopel, they think about themselves and what they want. I'm going to write a blog aout my own experience with them.
However, never ever give up, Iraq will come back.
We will be fine ,all what we nee is to get rid of those religious people who are destroying everything.
GOOD LUCK
A&EIraqi,
Thanks for your comment. The thing is that very same mosque I'm talking about once had a very good Imam, when Saddam was in power. He was able to save a number of youths from crime, once he was reported to the Baathist government he was harrassed until he fled the country for good. Had he been one of those like that I wrote about, he would have been amply rewarded.
Hi Chikitita. I'm sure that there is lots of things you could do. Your english is very good, and you like to communicate, which is a precious quality.
Today I saw the documentary "Iraq - The Lost Generation", and one of the topics was the story of a young doctor and his family that were trying to leave the country because he was receiving death threats. Couldn't you join the efforts to save the lives of people like them? It is just an idea, but...
Here in Brazil we had a blood dictatorship in the 60's and 70's and a lot of people had to flee. Our former president, for example, was an exiled. Our current Culture Minister too. Some didn't had that luck and died or suffered torture and prison, which is a tragedy. It's painful to imagine what they could be doing for our country today.
This urge you have to do something is a real blessing. And believe me, it's very rare. I hope you find a way to put it in action. God bless you.
ps: take a look at this.
Hi Anton,
In what way could I save such families. My own aunts and cousins were forced out of their homes, I couldn't do a thing. I'm helpless Anton, extremely helpless.
Hello Chikitita,
sorry , I know this conversation is between you and Anton, but, don't tink that yo're helpless. Everybody has lost alot, my house in Baghdad is going to be taken and nobody dares to do anything. Just please never ever give up , If you can't do manythings by your own let's try to help each other, let's do it together , I'm offering you my help , whenever you need something just ask me, may e i can help.
Good luck
A&EIraqi
Thank you so very much. I guess heaps of prayers could do. And I'm so sorry to hear about your house. It was my aunt's house that was taken, and I feel terrible for I had some very nice memories there, I'm sure your pain is even harder.
No need to be sorry A&EIraqi, you are very welcome. Sorry too about your house, I just can't imagine how it would be to have my house taken.
Hi Chikitita. Maybe using your communication skills and internet access to establish relations with people or organisations that could provide some help. It's only a blind suggestion, of course, because I don't have the knowledge to determine what could be practical in the conditions you are facing . But I'm sure that you are a very gifted person, and everyone who reads your posts will tell you the same. There is something waiting for you, don't give up hope.
Anton,
A layman voiced his views on a local TV channel. He said, "We cannot just wait for outsiders to come and solve our problems for us. We must sit like brothers, like kins, and do some serious talking." Couldn't agree more.
Yes, the layman is right. I thought you had discarded this option based in your comments. But if you believe in it, great.
A&Eiraqi, I am so sorry dear for your loss. No words can ease up your pain. A lot of my friends went through all this and we have a house that is now taken from us by force. We never lived in that house but we thought if we can sell it at least we can use the money to survive.
You are a wonderful person that you're offering your help. If only all of use united........
Anton,
If I have any hope left it would be in
fellow Iraqis' chances to wake up and
realize the fact that they have been conned
to believing they must be enemies rather
than one family. Thank you so very much fro
youe kind words.
Miraj,
Long time no see. Sorry about your house
too. For once in my life, I realized my
stepdad is wise after all. He lived all his
life in rantals.
The Mosques' sheikhs are the reason behind all these disasters. They provoke people and urge them to fight each other. ask me about it. I have covered their provoking speeches for my paper in baghdad. Both, Sunni and Shiite sheikhs, called people frankly to "defend" themselves. I wish I have time to write all about it. maybe later.
As for you Bibi, she was like that because Iraqis were different. It was shameful to ignore anyone being attacked. Today, we see bodies in the streets, walk away and say "Ani Sha3laya" ...
Hello everybody
I'm greatful for your nice words, believe me I'm not thinking about that house, yes I used to live in it ofr nine years, it's the place were I used to live, to love, help and be important, however there are many things which I'm thinking about now, and I consider them more important, I'm thinknig about the people who are being killed for no reason, I'm thinking about the mothers who have to suffer and fmilies who have to be deported,I'm thinking about my love which I'm not sure if he will persist while I'm away from her. I'm suffering while I'm in the place where peopel can enjoy their lives especially in this time of the year. All what I'm imploring everybosy is not to give up the hope , Irais will wake up , let's hope it will not take a long time, we have many things to be proud of, I've mentiponed that to why Dubai? in my comments, look at the bloggers , they're thinking about their country, look at the women women who are trying to do their best to prove that they're strong enough.
Once I thought that I had forgettn my country and it's peopel , however one Iraqi lady "Fireshteh" woke me up, I'll never ever give up. Let's try to do something, if we fail we will have the pride of trying.
Good luck
Bt,
I do not want to sound stereotypical, but
myabe because sheikhs have sequestered
themselves in ivory towers, which have
prevented them from seeing the fact that
Iraqis have always coexisted so easily for
decades and centuries and striking on the sectarian cord would only claim innocent lives including their own.
A&EIraqi,
As far as I'm concerned, my hope is wearing thin, but I'm still counting on a slim chance of a wakeup call that could put an end to this mayhem.
Dear Chikitita,
That means you still have the hope , a thin , week one , but you have it .
that what we need , please don't lose it. just go on
"I'm suffering while I'm in the place where peopel can enjoy their lives especially in this time of the year."
Ask me about it!
Without hope, we would have not been able to think, plan for future and do something positive. it is that hope that make us live and produce.
Hope floats!
A&EIraqi and BT,
Pray for us.
I am always praying for you guys. I don't want to be athiest but sometimes I feel there is no justice on earth.
I still believe in the power of prayers. So keep them on. By the way, says who there is justice on earth!
